Elvis Festival 15th Annual
We got there early for the 15th Annual Elvis Festival at the OC Fairgrounds. The Cadillacs were on show, Farrell's ice cream was serving up Peanut butter and pecan ice cream sundaes, and Suavecito Pomade was selling like hot cakes.
With three stages doing full-tilt Elvis, it was a challenge to catch all the action. The day started with a Priscilla & Elvis hair contest. The winner was a 14 year old girl, dressed in a mint 50's dress with gloves and hair piled high.
Then, promptly at noon, the Crème De La King competition kicked off to a standing room only crowd full of Elvis fans, fighting for prime seats and the best view to the tiny stage in the corner. Twelve contenders – two songs each – all owning it - whether it was 50's Blue Hawaii Elvis or white rhinestone jumpsuit Elvis. It was no surprise that Joe Bullock took the first place trophy, with throaty vocals and an energetic performance loved by all.
The last act we witnessed was on the main stage, where an energetic Elvis, packed into his white jumpsuit , wildly wooing the woman and little girls with scarves, sweaty kisses and teddy bears, never missing a beat.
By 3pm we were definitely Elvis-ed out and happy to have caught the full experience.
